Bob Baffert points Coil to Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita and overlooks the possibility of running in the Indiana Derby
The Bob Baffert trained 3-year-old colt, Coil was being considered for the Indiana Derby but will stay at Santa Anita to participate in the Grade 1 Goodwood Stakes on 1 October, 2011.
The son of Point Given, out of Eversmile by Theatrical, will take on older horses for the first time in a stakes race in the $250,000 GoodWood Stakes, trainer Bob Baffert confirmed the Haskell Invitational winner’s next start.
Bob Baffert was also considering running Coil in the Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park, but decided to keep the colt at his home base in California.
Coil will face the likes of Awesome Gem, the experienced 8-year-old gelding is coming off a win in the Grade 3 Longacres Handicap and defeated the local hero Noosa Beach, who almost never loses at Emerald Downs, at about 1 mile on 21 August, with the winning
time of 1 minute and 34.80 seconds.
Then there is the unpredictable 4-year-old gelding, Game on Dude, who on his day with a turn of foot can defeat the greatest of horses, but recently he has been finishing on the board consistently although nothing to write home about.
Coil’s stable mate, Game on Dude is coming off a 4th place finish in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic over the Del Mar’s synthetic surface, at about 1 ¼ miles on 28 August.
He finished behind a strong trio, Stately Victory, Twirling Candy and Acclamation and none of these experienced horses will take part in the Grade 1 Goodwood Stakes.
Talking about form, the 3-year-old colt Coil has been in great form. Winning four starts out of his 7 career starts and finished on the board twice with the earnings of d $752,560, including wins in the Grade 3 Affirmed at Hollywood Park, and the Grade $1
million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.
Coil did not impress in his last start in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes, where he was last of 10 in the Saratoga feature race on 27 August, 2011, in the 3-year-old’s most recent start.
