Bob Black Jack retired after sustaining an injury during his sixth place finish in the Citation Handicap
The 6-year-old, Bob Black Jack, the lightly raced colt in the year 2010 and 2011 was retired after turning in a sixth place finish in the Grade 2 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park on 26 November, 2011. He ran over a distance of 1 1/16 miles on turf under jockey Joe Talamo and during the race he incurred a career ending injury.
Jeranimo won the Grade 2 Citation Handicap as he topped the 1 1/16 mile distance in 1 minute and 40.87 seconds, while War Element and Calimonco followed in next as both horses finished second and third, respectively.
Bob Black Jack tore both branches in his left front suspensory, as he was vanned off from the field after jumping into the lead and to perform his pace setting duties.
The Grade 2 Citation Handicap was Bob Black Jack’s turf debut and his retirement was announced by trainer Jim Kasparoff who confirmed the news on 27 November, 2011.
The California bred son of Stormy Jack, out of mare Molly’s Prospector by Native Prospector, Bob Black Jack have been out of racing due to injury in his other leg. After racing a full season in 2008, Bob Black Jack, came back for a single race in 2010 missing the whole of 2009.
Trainer Jim Kasparoff confirmed that this time the grade 1 winner will not be returning to the racing scene taking into account the nature of his injury.
“It’s different from a previous injury on his other leg. He’s comfortable in his stall. There were no fractures, only muscle tears.”
"There will be no more comebacks. He will probably be here another month until he is comfortable standing. Then we will look somewhere for him to stand stud.”
His only other start this season came in the California Cup Sprint over the Santa Anita Park’s dirt course, where Bob Black Jack competing over at six furlongs finished second to winner Courtside on 29 October, 2011.
In 2008 he won the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes over at seven furlongs at Santa Anita Park, and he is also a former record holder for six furlongs, downing it in 1 minute and 6.53 seconds. He won five races out of 13 starts with the earnings of $704,925.
