Bob Bowman says Michael Phelps is feelilng the pressure of World Championships: Swimming News
Bob Bowman, the coach of 14-times Olympic gold medallist, Michael Phelps claims that Phelps is feeling the built-up pressure of the upcoming 2011 World Championships in Shanghai this July.
The coach of world’s best swimmer, Bowman, also expressed that his kinship with Michael has not changed over the past decade. Their workings together and professional affinity is mesmerised with some of the historic moments of 2004 Athens Olympics and the
2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He also said that they understand the competition and have a mutual beneficial professional relationship.
Bowman said that Phelps has done some great work by building Michael Phelps Swimming School to promote swimming countrywide. In addition, Phelps is also working on to expand the reach of his school to the other parts of the country.
Bowman said that the Beijing’s champion has woke up after his defeat in the 200m butterfly event at the Eric Namesnik Michigan Grand Prix during April, 2011. The champion swimmer was extremely disappointed after his first defeat in the 200m event over the
past nine years. Phelps finished fourth in the butterfly event behind Wu Peng of China, Marcin Cieslak of Poland and America’s Tyler Clary at the Michigan Grand Prix.
Bowman said that he cannot blame Phelps for his defeat. He uttered, “How man Grand Prix events can you swim in? I think he's really excited about Worlds and about Shanghai. And that's where his focus is. Could he have done a better job? Well, yeah. But it's
a very long time to go to be [at the top] all the time. I'm happy to let him come down a little bit, and then we can kind of work back up."
The 25-year-old Phelps admitted he didn’t put much effort into his training program after the Beijing Olympics, which accounted him for the title of his beloved event at the fifth stop of 2010-2011 USA Grand Prix Series at Michigan.
Phelps said he is aware of the fact that his competitors do not fear him now as they used to do before. He said, "You can tell by body language. I've noticed it a lot more the last two years than I really ever have. That's something I've always watched,
how people are acting toward me, and how they've changed."
Furthermore, North Baltimore based Phelps is extremely excited that he will race Australia’s great Ian Thorpe at the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games. He has claimed that he will be eying seven events at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai and if
he is successful in that he will continue the same at the 2012 Olympics.
