Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan return to 2011 Legg Mason Tennis Classic to reclaim title – Tennis News
On the 15th of July, the world number one doubles team, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan disclosed, that they will be participating in the 2011 Legg Mason Tennis Classic which will start on the 30th of July through
to Sunday, the 7th of August at the William H.G FitzGerald Tennis centre in Rock Creek Park, Washington D.C., U.S.A.
The American Bryan brothers, (Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan) have held their position as world number one doubles team since the 16th of August 2010. In 2010, they tied 61 doubles titles with Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde
and had an amazing year finishing it at world number one for a record of six times with a perfect 11-0 in the finals. In 2011 they won their eleventh Grand Slam title in Wimbledon, London, where they won the final round 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(2) against Robert Lindstedt
and Horia Tecau. The twins have showed no signs of slowing down this year; they will also be defending their title at the US Open which is the final Grand Slam event of the year.
The pair played their first Legg Mason Tennis Classic as wild card entries in 1997. Their first final showing at the event came in 2001, though they failed to clinch the title. Following another unsuccessful run in 2002, the Bryans
finally clinched three back-to-back titles here winning them in 2005-07. Both were very excited about the tournament and confirming their entry, Mike said, “This year will be our 11th time playing and we’ve won three times. We always enjoy coming to DC and
are eager to win a fourth title.”
The tournament started in 1969; a major event of the Grand Prix Tennis Circuit until 1989. Previously known as Washington Star International, it was mainly a clay court event, however, was later resurfaced to a hard court. In order
to get more publicity the event is now one of the US Open Series of hard-court tournaments leading up to the US Open in September.
It is a prestigious ATP World Tour 500 tournament, presented by GEICO. It is also recognized as one of the top 20 events on the ATP World Tour and as a member of the Olympus US Open Series, the tournament offers more than USD 1.4
million in total financial commitment.
The tournament administration is excited about top players playing in the event. Tournament Director, Director Jeff Newman said, “The addition of the Bryans would be considered by many spectators as the greatest doubles team
of all-time, It is great news for Washington tennis fans and they are without question two of the most charismatic players on the ATP World Tour, both on and off the court, and we are thrilled to have them competing”.
The Bryan bothers would be joined by world number nine, Mardy Fish and world number seven Gael Monfils not to mention some influential names such as Andy Roddick and Viktor Troicki , in addition to, Fernando Verdasco and many more
to the singles and doubles field. A preeminent team that fans will want to see is the doubles entry list Martin Damm and Robert Lindstedt who are also the defending champions.
