Bob Fernley believes Paul di Resta could be world champion – Formula 1 news
Force India deputy team principal, Bob Fernley believes that their driver, Paul di Resta has got the potential to become a Formula 1 world champion.
Fernley said that Di Resta and number of other drivers are well capable of achieving great results if they are provided with competitive cars and packages. Moreover, he stated that some drivers can surely become world champion, but their skills and capabilities
are still unseen because of their inability to make their way into top teams like Red Bull Racing.
“There is no reason why he and a number of others would not have as well, but certainly Paul could. Probably at least 50% of the drivers on the grid today, given the right car and package, would be a World Champion, because they are some quality drivers,”
Fernley said.
The British driver performed convincingly well in 2012 and secured 14th place in the drivers’ championship with 46 points. Furthermore, he remained ahead of Pastor Maldonado of Williams and behind the legendary driver, Michael Schumacher who retired
from the sport at the end of the last year.
Besides, he has performed inspiring well in this season so far. He secured an incredible 4th place finish in the Bahrain Grand Prix after taking a start from 5th grid position.
At present, he is standing at 8th place in this year’s drivers’ championship with 20 points. Additionally, he is ahead of Nico Rosberg of Mercedes and behind Romain Grosjean of Lotus.
Fernley asserted that they have brought Adrian Sutil in their squad in this season so that he can drive well alongside Di Resta as they want both their drivers to perform well.
“The idea of bringing Adrian in was that it would be as seamless as possible as to what had been happening between Paul and Nico and Paul and Adrian,” he said.
“They need to give us quite a tough time and we have to set it up that they are having a tough time,” he added.
It will be very interesting to see how the 27-year-old performs in the forthcoming races and whether he will be able to come up to the expectations of his team or not.
