Bob Hope Classic: Derek Lamely jumps into early lead
Derek Lamely smashed a round of nine-under-63 on the first day of Bob Hope Classic to surge into lead, while JJ Henry and Jhonathan Vegas followed in the second spot.
The American teed off from the front and set the Palmer course on fire with five birdies and one eagle. His fabulous eagle came at the par-5 sixth hole, when he ironed the second shot from 220 yards for an edge of two points. This was not it. He wrapped
the front nine with the fifth birdie of the day to proceed towards the back.
However, Lamely lost his pace on the back and failed to match his earlier stride. He opted for a slight change of strategy, which hampered his scorecard. The American missed the fairway on the tenth hole and had to settle for the first bogey of the day but
he did not let it affect his performance and netted a birdie on the following hole to counter off the earlier loss.
The veteran smacked two back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th hole to rise to the top, but gave up the edge to a bogeyman residing on the third last hole of the course. However, he wedged the final shot on the closing hole and walked
to the clubhouse with a birdie and tag of a leader.
Lamely was extremely happy with his early accomplishment. He said, “The golf courses are perfect. The weather is just so good. You've just got to go out and stay aggressive every hole. Hopefully you can get hot and make a bunch of putts, and I actually got
that going today. I keep getting better at the few things I've changed, so it's finally getting to the point where I can think my way around and just make some putts.”
Two strokes below him was the duo of JJ Henry and Jhonathan Vegas who smashed an identical score to take the second highest spot of the leaderboard.
Henry recorded a fabulous play comprising of one eagle and seven birdies against one bogey on the Nicklaus course. He topped the putts per round and sand saves average, which proved his prowess in the short game.
