My son struggles in Math, which homeschool package do you prefer? Bob Jones or Abeka?

I want something that will be easy for me to teach my son. Easy to understand, easy and better planning and layout of books. Thanks

My son will be taking PreAlgebra in 9th grade

  1. Neither.

    I suggest using Teaching Textbooks:

That will be easier on you and on him.

  2. I went to christian school and homeschool. Abeka is great material but for math use bob jones...Much easier to understand.

  3. Saxon Math is what we used. I heard Bob Jones isn't so great in the upper grades. I personally like abeka but, I used saxon math.

  4. I agree - neither.  I'd recommend either VideoText Interactive (my son's fave), Teaching Textbooks (also good), or Math U See.  All three programs are taught either by DVD or CDRom, are very concept-based, and are meant to be learned fairly independently by the student - even students who aren't so hot in math.

  5. I think ABeka is better, but from my personal experience (as a homeschooled student) Saxon math is by far the best math cirriculum ever. It's really clear, and it explains everything, and it's got plenty of review - instead of all the problems for one lesson being about that lesson, there's a variety of material going weeks back. It was very, very helpful for me.
