Bob Melvin named American League's top manager – MLB Update
Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin has been named American League’s manager of the year. He won this honour with a 19 rookies in which 12 of them were pitchers.
This is still quite an achievement for Melvin who despite having less fire power in the roster, outplayed many in the league.
Athletics, under Melvin’s guidance, won total 94 wins and impressed many with their extraordinary performance. Not in their own league, but the Athletics also outclassed the National League teams during the Major League regular season.
As he has been announced AL manager of the year, all the Athletics fans are feeling much contentment on A’s skipper’s win.
Winning the American League West Championship, Melvin guided the Athletics into post season with ease. Their post season spot was itself a great achievement but many are agree now that the way Melvin carried his team into the playoffs, certainly proved his
valour.
With this award, Athletics’ skipper has also won a rare distinction in the league to become the winning manager of any particular year for two times in his career. He won the same honour in 2007 managing the Arizona Diamondbacks.
"I was sitting in a dark room, and it was a little claustrophobic, For me, it's more a validation for our organization having a great year," Melvin joked.
Later rookie right-hander Jarrod Parker said of his manager, "Coming into spring training, obviously we all read and watch sports and know we weren't picked to do what we did, Bob said, 'Don't worry about that. We know who we are.' Bob stayed upbeat when
times were tough.”
“It's as good a managerial job as anyone I've been around, The entire time I've been here, we've had a lot of award winners. But I'm not sure we've ever had a winner more deserving," said A's general manager Billy Beane.
Melvin is a highly talented individual and possesses large Major League experience. As a player and as manager in the league, Melvin has achieved many distinctions.
He started his career as professional baseball player in 1985 with the Detroit Tigers while later he also went onto to play for the San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.
On the other hand, as manager, he has also worked for Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks before he joined the Oakland Athletics in 2011.
