Bob Preston of Nelson Yacht Club wins 2012 Mitre 10 Mega New Zealand Paper Tiger Championship
After a superb showdown in the last six days, the Port Taranaki waters have now calmed down. The New Plymouth Yacht Club hosted the 2012 Mitre 10 Mega New Zealand Paper Tiger National Championship, which finished successfully featuring Bob Peterson as the
winner of the regatta’s National Title.
Peterson, on his boat Cool Cat, made a fantastic run throughout the Championship and finally made it to the top podium to claim the prestigious title. Peterson overcame the 50-boat fleet with some impressive sailing skills on Port Taranaki waters.
Preston grabbed a seven-point lead over the second podium finisher, Ryan 'Rowdy' Leatham of New Plymouth Yacht Club/Evans Bay Yacht Club. Meanwhile, Mark Bell of Ponsonby Cruising Club, on his boat Totally Wired, was able to take third position overall.
The Mitre 10 Tiger Nationals is an overall National Title, where sailors from around the New Zealand participate. Along with the National Title, the Championship also contains sailing competitions in the B and C Grade titles. This means each sailor in the
fleet had a chance to win a title.
The list of titles in the Championships included the Junior (Under 21 Years) Title, the New Zealand Women's Title, the Grand Masters (60-64 years) Title, the Great Grand Masters (65+ years) Title and the Veteran's (50-59 years) Title.
The weather conditions over the racing area were ideal for a nice race. The fleet took advantage of the forecast and completed the scheduled races on time.
