Bob Tway leads the second round at the Montreal Championship
Bob Tway fired a seven-under par 65 in the second round of the Champions Tour's Montreal Championship, to take a one-stroke lead over Mark Calcavecchia, at the Vallee du Richelieu Vercheres in Sainte-Julie on Saturday, June 23, 2012.
Tway started off with a birdie on the very first hole that he played. The highlight of his performance on day-two includes the streak of six straight birdies, starting from the seventh hole.
Through 17 holes, he was eight-under for the round. However, a bogey on the final hole forced him to settle for a 65 in the end.
"It was disappointing to finish that way, but it was still a nice round," said Tway, who is winless on the 50-and-over tour.
He told that he was not been able to put all his efforts in his game since the last few years. Prior to playing on the Champions Tour, he had eight PGA Tour wins registered to his name — the 2003 Canadian Open being the last one.
"I haven't played like I think I'm capable of playing since I've been out here, but that's just the nature of the game," he said. "You keep plugging along and practicing".
"I'm seeing signs of much better play, but my scoring has been poor for a long time. If you don't chip the ball well, if you don't wedge the ball well and if you don't putt the ball well, it's tough to score. This week has been a little bit better, and therefore
I'm doing better".
He is now hoping to end the winning drought on the Champions Tour, with a consistent play in the final round of the event in Canada.
The golf commentators believe that he should focus on playing his natural game rather than trying new things that can spoil his position on the leaderboard.
In the meantime, Calcavecchia carded a five-under par 67 to take the second spot on the leaderboard.
He has a great track record in Canada, as he recorded wins in the PGA Tour’s Greater Vancouver Open and Canadian Open in 1997 and 2005, respectively. Therefore, he poses a serious threat to Tway while entering the final round on Sunday.
