Bobby Abreu shines as Los Angeles Angels defeat Baltimore Orioles 9-8 – MLB Update
Bobby Abreu put in a brilliant performance as he hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to drive in three-runs in the 12th inning and help the Los Angeles Angels defeat the Baltimore Orioles 9-8 on Saturday, August 20 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.
The toughly fought game saw the Baltimore Orioles having the lead, but eventually failed to turn it into their advantage. With the 9-8 win in the seemingly unending game, the Los Angeles Angels now have 2-0 lead in the three-game series.
Nolan Reimold, J.J. Hardy and Nick Markakis had a single each in the second inning to put the Orioles in the charge of the game with 3-0 lead by the end of the second. Erick Aybar of Angels had a single to make it 3-1.
As the third inning began, Bobby Abreu had a two-run double, Torii Hunter and Howie Kendrick had a single each to make it 5-3 for the Angels. Adam Jones had a homer in the fifth for the Orioles to bring the lead down to 5-4.
The Angels did not give up and Peter Bourjos homered to give the team a decent 6-4 lead but Vladimir Guerrero and Matt Wieters had a single for the Orioles to level the score by the end of the eighth inning.
The relievers of the respective teams then had the best of pitches to throw, making it hard for the hitters to get runs as the score stood tied by the end of the 11th inning. When the 12th inning commenced, Adam Jones had a two-run
single to right against Hisanori Takahashi that put the Baltimore Orioles in the driving seat with a 8-6 lead.
While everything seemed to be favouring the Orioles by now, Kevin Gregg could not hold it for his team. Hank Conger was the first to score a single followed by that of Alberto Collaspo that levelled the score for the Angels. Bobby Abreu had a sacrifice hit
with bases-loaded to win the game by 9-8 for the Los Angeles Angels.
