Bobby Hurley dominates Men’s 100m backstroke prelims – EnergyAustralia SC Championships
Bobby Hurley of SOPAC, NSW dominated the preliminary rounds of Men’s 100m backstroke on opening day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Short Course Championships at Challenge Stadium in Perth on Wednesday, September 12.
Hurley, who recently proved his dominance in the qualifying rounds of Men’s 200m freestyle, continued his nerve-wrecking form in the four-lap backstroke discipline and made his way into the playoff as top contender for the title.
With his impeccable pace, he remained just a touch ahead of his following swimmer and entered the playoff with a fastest qualification time of 52.58 seconds.
Hurley was followed by Ashley Delaney of Nunawading, who remained just 0.08 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and tapped the wall with a second best effort of 52.66 seconds.
Delaney was chased by Daniel Blackborrow of Melbourne VIC, who stayed 0.29 seconds slower from his former finisher and hit the wall with an effort of 52.95 seconds.
Fourth best qualification spot of the race was secured by Bob Jovanovich of Arena, WA, who stayed 0.12 seconds behind and touched the wall with a timing of 53.07 seconds.
The 23-year-old Jovanovich was chased by Joshua Beaver of Tigersharks, VIC, who suffered a loss of only 0.04 seconds from his foregoing finisher and obtained fifth best position by submitting a time of 53.11 seconds.
Subsequently, Beaver enjoyed an advantage of 0.16 seconds over Benjamin Treffers of Burley Griffin, who qualified into the final round as sixth fastest swimmer by completing his race in a time of 53.27 seconds.
Treffers was followed by Ben Edmonds of Unattached, SA, who remained 0.16 seconds slower form overpowering his preceding swimmer and surfaced on the finishing blockade as seventh fastest swimmer by producing a time of 53.43 seconds.
Edmonds was trailed by Jamie Sturgeon of Nudgee Brothers, who stayed just one arm stroke apart and secured eighth best qualification spot of the race by concluding his swim in a time of 53.78 seconds.
Hurley received a huge round of applause from the audience for his scintillating effort in his second event of the session while he expressed his desire of achieving the same in final.
