Bobby Hurley wins Men’s 200m freestyle prelims – 2012 EnergyAustralia SC Championships
Bobby Hurley of SOPAC, NSW won the qualification rounds of Men’s 200m freestyle on opening day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Short Course Championships at Challenge Stadium in Perth on Wednesday, September 12.
The 23-year-old Hurley demonstrated his unrelenting efforts in the eight-lap freestyle discipline and qualified into the final as top contender for gold medal.
With his gruelling efforts, Hurley remained slightly ahead of his strongest challenger and transpired on the finishing end as top fastest swimmer by clocking a time of 1 minute and 44.96 seconds.
Hurley was followed by Jarrod Killey of Hunter, NSW, who was only 0.09 seconds apart and reached the playoff as second best finisher by producing a time of 1 minute and 45.05 seconds.
Killey was chased by Kyle Richardson of Chandler, QLD, who stayed 0.19 seconds behind and finished third in the event by reporting a time of 1 minute and 45.24 seconds.
Fourth best qualification spot of the race was obtained by Travis Mahoney of Nunawading, who stayed half body length away from his former finisher and tapped the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 45.89 seconds.
The 22-year-old Mahoney was chased by Tommaso D’Orsogna of West Coast, WA, who was 0.18 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and proved his eligibility for fifth best qualifying position by touching the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 46.07 seconds.
Subsequently, D’Orsogna was trailed by Shane Asbury of Nunawading, who stayed 0.13 seconds behind and concluded his race in a time of 1 minute and 46.20 seconds.
Asbury was chased by Cameron McEvoy of Southport Olympic Swimming Club, who stayed 0.15 seconds slower and tapped the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 46.35 seconds.
Last qualification spot of the race was obtained by Alexander Graham of St Kevins, VIC, who suffered a loss of only 0.07 seconds from his preceding swimmer but was lucky enough to secure eighth position as he hit the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 46.42 seconds.
In addition, Hurley was happy with his top qualifying effort and wished to achieve the same in the final round.
