Bobby Reynolds, Jack Sock move into quarterfinal – Sacramento Challenger 2011
Fourth seeded local, Bobby Reynolds moved into the quarterfinal of the Natomas Men’s Professional Tennis Tournament on Wednesday, 5th October after doing way with Dane Frederik Nielsen in three sets. The local survived
a mid match lapse as he secured a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win over the lower ranked Dane in a little over two hours.
Having played each other earlier in the year at the Rimouski Challenger, Reynolds was able to go 2-0 in the pair’s head to head score as he secured yet another win over the Dane professional.
Breaking Nielsen in the very first game, Reynolds led the set 2-0 extending it to 4-1 another break later. Winning on serve, Reynolds was able to clinch the set 6-2 as he went one up in the set score. Down but not out, Nielsen
came fighting in the second set as he matched blow to blow with the American. Tied at five games each in the second set, Nielsen held service to go 6-5 in the lead before securing a 7-5 win after breaking the local in the twelfth game.
A set win a piece forced the match into a decider set. Riding the local crowd support, Reynolds regained his lost footing as he composed himself in his onslaught against the poor Dane. Repeating the first set performance to the
last dot, Reynolds secured a 4-1 lead before closing out the set with another 6-2 win, sealing his 2-1 set victory in the match.
Capitalizing on the Dane’s nine double faults, Reynolds added his own six aces and a 73 percent first serve win to the mix as he secured a three set victory over Nielsen and a berth in the last eight of the event. Playing Reynolds
in the next round will either be compatriot Alex Kuznetsov or sixth seeded South African Izak Van Der Merwe.
Joining Reynolds in the last eight and the only other professional to do so on Wednesday is the local wildcard entrant, Jack Sock. Upsetting eighth seeded Brit James Ward in the opening round, Sock survived his own three set thriller
against Roman Borvanov in the second round of the event.
Toiling for one hour and forty four minutes, the local survived a second set loss to secure a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win. The hard-hitting American hit twelve aces along with four double faults and a 72 percent first serve win to clinch
a quarterfinal berth for himself.
