Bobby Reynolds, James Ward enter the quarterfinals – Van Open 2011 CH
Second-seeded Bobby Reynolds from the United States of America has made his way into the quarter final of the 2011 Vancouver Open Men’s singles tournament on Wednesday.
Reynolds advanced into the last eight after getting the better of Luka Gregorc from Slovenia in the second round in three sets. The final match score was 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 and the battle concluded within two hours and twenty minutes of action.
Reynolds started strongly against Gregorc and thus quickly wrapped up the first set 6-4, winning 63 percent on service, 46 percent of return and 53 percent of points in
total.
The Slovenian Gregorc after losing the opening set did well to improve his game and put up a good fight to take the match to a third set, winning the second set with six
games to four and taking the match score at one set apiece.
The decisive set once again made things easier for the American as Gregorc double faulted on five different occasions in the first game and Reynolds immediately took a lead
of 2-0.
Gregorc’s attempts to channel his play into Reynolds weaker forehand wing in the decider were never successful and being unable to make the most of his reprieve, the 27-year-old
floated a forehand long to close the match in two hours and twenty minutes.
Reynolds next opponent will be French Clement Reix, who defeated seventh-seeded Fritz Wolmarans in an epic three-set match 4-6, 6-3, 7(11)-6(9).
Meanwhile, fifth-seeded James Ward of Great Britain followed Reynolds and demolished Canada’s Erik Chvojka, dropping thirteen games to enter the quarterfinals in two hours
and thirteen minutes of play.
Ward, 24, was not at his best as he began his quest for a maiden Challenger title of the year but was still far too strong for Canada’s Chvojka.
Although Ward lost the opener, he did not lose his concentration and quickly broke back as the Brit dropped only four points on serve in the middle frame of play while putting
constant pressure on Chvojka, who eventually cracked when he was broken at 3-3.
Ward served out the set and was immediately on the attack again, finding cracks in Chvojka’s armour and not to mention his pretty reliable serve with much ease as he ran
away with the second set.
There was no way back for the world number 315, and his defeat was sealed when he sailed a forehand long after two hours and thirteen minutes, with Ward progressing to play
compatriot Alex Bogdanovic next in the quarterfinals, here at Vancouver, Canada.
