Bobby Reynolds bounces back to advance to the semis in Canada Challenger Event
Top seeded American Bobby Reynolds made a comeback win against 6th seeded Israeli Amir Weintraub in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 nail bitter match on Friday. He has advanced to semi-final at the 2011 Men’s singles Rimouski Challenger.
Ranked 155th in the world, Reynolds showed his tremendous skills to dump the world number 257, Weintraub on his first ever meeting. Though he hasn’t had much progress this season so far as he was ousted in the qualifiers
at Memphis, Delray Beach and Indian Wells but he entered this event with full confidence. The 28-year-old Reynolds overpowered Frenchmen, Albano Olivetti and Ludovic Walter, in straight sets in the first two rounds to reach this spot.
He was little shaky at the start of the opening set. Though he smashed seven aces, had a similar first serve percentage of 72 percent and earned an amazing 85 percent win on it but he failed to save the Israeli’s only breakpoint.
The 24-year-old Wientraub on the other hand saved all the four American’s breakpoints and with the only opportunity he converted to his advantage, he won the set 6-3.
In the second set, Reynolds re-focused and re-formed. The outcome was that the American scored a lower first serve share but with his awesome tact and agility, he saved both break points and converted the only opportunity he had
to win the equalizer set 6-4.
The American kept his momentum in the final set and held his opening serve spectacularly. He then kept all his serves and saved all the three breakpoints. In addition to this, he committed less double faults, produced four ferocious
aces and broke Weintraub’s serve once to win the set 6-3 convincingly.
He will next face 4th seeded Dane Frederick Nielson who reached this spot after overwhelming American Greg Ouellette with a breadstick.
Another seeded player advanced to the semis on another court. 5th South African seeded Fritz Wolmarans trashed American Kevin Kim in straight sets.
World number 201, Wolmarans displayed his tremendous skills in the match as he hammered 13 massive aces, committed zero double faults and broke the American serve four times to win convincingly 6-1, 6-2. The 25-year-old also had
a much better first serve percentage of 67 percent as compared to Kim’s 49 percent and earned a spectacular 85 percent win on it.
The South African will face Canadian Vasek Pospisil who reached this spot after upsetting 3rd seeded Italian Matteo Viola by converting two out of five breakpoint opportunities in straight sets.
