Bobby Reynolds cripples Simone Vagnozzi in the qualifiers – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
Qualifying 13th seed, Bobby Reynolds, blasted past the Italian rising star, Simone Vagnozzi, with a breadstick at the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 on Monday. He jolted down a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the world number 175 to advance in the final round
of the qualifying competition at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park.
The crowd favourite, Reynolds, showed awe-inspiring skills to crush the 28-year-old in straight sets in their first meeting. He took down the Italian in 79 minutes and secured a place in the final qualifying round at this hard court tournament held at Key
Biscayne.
Reynolds flashed into the opening set and fired massive forehands to wipe out the opening five games in a row before Vagnozzi could hold on. He then held his serve once more and pulled out the opener with a breadstick. He dusted away both breakpoints he
faced and cashed in two out of three break opportunities to rule the set.
The 29-year-old kept momentum running into the following set and held his serve in the second game to tie the scores at 1-1. He then maintained consistency in his game and kept remaining serves until he got the coveted break in the seventh game, subsequently
putting his nose ahead for the first time in this set. In spite of losing his edge in the very next game, Reynolds capitalised on another break chance in the ninth game and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
All in all, the local star spilled several errors and seven double faults. He also formulated a poor first serve share of 54 per cent as opposed to the Italian’s 74 per cent. However, Reynolds capitalised on four out of five break opportunities to steal
the show.
Up next for Reynolds is the third seed, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who also outmuscled his Italian rival to set-up this clash. The Spaniard rallied past Matteo Viola in a three set thriller in two hours and seven minutes. He brilliantly fended off seven out
of 12 breakpoints he encountered and converted six out of nine break opportunities to his advantage, ultimately sealing the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 success.
