Bobby Reynolds plonks Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol to reach main draw – US Open 2012
Seeded 30th in the qualifying event, Bobby Reynolds got the better of the Spanish contender, Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol, in straight sets at the US Open 2012 on Friday. He nudged up a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory against the Spaniard to power into the main
draw at this last of the four Grand Slam events held in Corona Park in Queens, United States.
The local seed fended off early resilience posed by the Spaniard to bag the match. After penning down the victory in one hour and 33 minutes, Reynolds assertively advanced into the opening round at this major hard court event taking place in New York City.
The American made a sloppy entry at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He suffered the first blow in the fourth game and fell at 1-4. However, he stayed on the right path and snatched his break back in the seventh game, subsequently prolonging
the set to a tie-breaker. Reynolds edged past the Spaniard in it and clicked the opener with a 7-6(5) success.
Ranked 151st in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Reynolds carried his rhythm in the following set. He got the critical break in the fourth game and leaped to a 4-1 lead. The American held
his remaining serves with poise and consequently clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
Reynolds withstood 22 winners and regardless of spilling 24 unforced errors, he stole the show. The American manipulated a better first serve share of 66 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 56 per cent and amazingly availed 19 out of 30 points on it. He also
hammered three aces and sealed the match with 75 points.
Reynolds will square off against his qualifying compatriot, Tim Smyczek, who bounced back to stun third seed, Ricardas Berankis, in three states to set up this clash.
The qualifying top seed, Igor Sijsling, will join the American in the main draw. He dumped 27th seed, Josselin Ouanna, in straight sets to progress. The Dutch lost his serve once but cashed in three out of 11 break chances to register a 6-3, 6-4
victory.
