Bobby Ryan scores pair of goals to lead Anaheim Ducks over Dallas Stars
Since officially joining the Anaheim Ducks’ line-up as a full-time player in the 2008-09 season, right-winger Bobby Ryan has quickly become one of the team’s impact players. He had an
impressive influence in Anaheim’s 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday, 26 October, scoring two goals to help the Ducks win the game.
How it happened
The Ducks may have won the game, but it was the Stars who got the ball rolling. Loui Eriksson opened the scoring with a power play goal at 16:06 of the first period. Eriksson tipped a
Mike Ribeiro shot into the net, with Brad Richards also contributing an assist. It was the only goal scored in the first period.
In the second period, the Ducks’ offence came to life, as Ryan scored his first of two goals just 28 seconds into the second period. The tipped-in goal was assisted by Lubomir Visnovsky
and Toni Lydman. Visnovsky would also assist on Ryan’s second goal, which came at 10:30. Enforcer George Parros closed out the second frame with an unassisted wrist shot that beat Dallas goaltender Kari Lehtonen.
The Stars got their second goal of the game at 6:08 of the third period. Brian Sutherby’s wrist shot got past Jonas Hiller, with the assists coming from Brandon Segal and Toby Petersen.
Teemu Selanne made it a 4-2 game by finding the back of the net at 10:11 on a power play. Ryan Getzlaf earned his 10th assist of the game on Selanne’s goal, while Cory Perry had the other assist. Perry would add a tally of his own at 15:30 to pad the Ducks’
lead, and ultimately win the game.
Post-game, Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said that Ryan’s pair of second-period goals made a big difference for the team during the game.
“At times he looked like the best player on the ice. He was skating – and when he does that, he’s a dynamic player.”
Selanne’s goal, the 611th of his career, surpassed Bobby Hull to give him 15th position on the NHL’s list of all-time goal-scorers.
“I’ve met (Hull) many times, and I never imagined I’d score more goals than him. It’s unbelievable, when you look back at your career, the numbers. Good things happen when you play long.”
Richards said that the Ducks took advantage of their chances, and that the Stars needed to be more realistic in future games.
“They hung around and got some opportunistic goals. For us, we have to be more realistic. Just because we step onto the ice, doesn’t mean we're going to score goals. It takes more work
than that. We’re getting frustrated, but you have to stay with it. It’s mental toughness of the team.”
Dallas returns to the ice to take on the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday, 28 October, while Anaheim faces the New Jersey Devils on Friday, 29 October.
