Bobby Valentine calls hitting coach Dave Magadan back for 2012 season – MLB News
In his introductory news conference at Fenway Park on Thursday, the Boston Red Sox newly appointed manager Bobby Valentine has shown his interest to hire a new hitting coach for the club. He named his former college room-mate and team-mate Bill Buckner as
potential candidate, but the odds have come into favour of Dave Magadan.
Bobby Valentine, making an argument he does not want to waste any time in the open market, has called the Red Sox hitting coach, Dave Magadan, who served the club in 2011 season, back in the team for 2012 season.
Magadan informed the major newspaper in Miami that he has talked with Bobby about his return.
"I spoke with Bobby this morning and had a good conversation with him," Magadan said. "He said he wanted me back on the staff. I'm under contract and I certainly accepted."
Valentine’s reason to reach a decision was evident for the whole baseball circles, especially to the American League East, where the Red Sox hitter crushed each pitcher. The Red Sox hitting led the Major League in almost every category. They played 5710
at-bats, made 875 runs, 2631 total bases, 352 doubles, 842 runs batted-in, .349 OBP, .461 slugging average, 59 extra-bases and .810 OPS.
While hiring Valentine as manager, the Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington has shown his agreement to any of his decisions. Valentine will not have to get any advice from the front office, however, the confidence that the front office has shown over Magadan
will defiantly help him elevate the performance in next season.
"It feels good," he said. "I'm glad the front office gave me a nice recommendation and I think that had a lot to do with it. I put a lot into my job and I don't take anything for granted, as all of our coaches do on the staff."
In their move towards the new season, the Red Sox still has bullpen coach Gary Tuck and bench coach Demarlo Hale under contract, but the club has not given any offer to third-base coach Tim Bogar. However, according to sources, the decision might come in
the next few days.
Valentine has also taken some serious steps to hire free-agent designated hitter David Ortiz.
