Bobby Valentine waits for Boston Red Sox offer – MLB News
Although Boston Red Sox met with Bobby Valentine two times in the last two weeks, the veteran manager still has to receive a formal offer from the club.
Valentine met with Red Sox manager Ben Cherington and the meeting seemed to have gone smoothly, but the 61-year-old manager was not given any final decision. According to sources, the delay in the offer is because of the consideration of Gene Lamont, who
was also interviewed by Cherington. Lamont has reportedly met with the Red Sox majority owner John Henry and Chairman Tom Werner.
It can still not be predicted where things will turn, as the Red Sox has a serious problem in deciding between the two major candidates. Valentine and Lamont both have the same stature in Major League Baseball. Valentine has 21 years of experience while
Lamont has eight years experience.
61-year-old Valentine, who served in MLB as slugger for ten years, administrated Texas Rangers and New York Mets for a total of 15 years, but his club never won a division series. In 2000, Mets only made it to the National League Pennant through Wild Card
but lost to the New York Yankees in the World Series.
After leaving the Mets in 2002 and resting for two years, Valentine took charge of the Japanese club Chiba Lotte Marines. Valentine made the club won the Japanese Series in 2005 and after serving four more years returned back to U.S. Since his return, Valentine
is working as an analyst for a major news channel in New York.
Valentine is popular on his outspoken and forceful habits, which has always enlightened controversies against him. He received the biggest allegations while his stay in New York, when he supposedly had clashes with the team players, managers and media members.
On the other hand, during his stay in Japan, Valentine always observed decency and earned a very good reputation.
Cherington has already expressed in the media that he wanted to hire a new manager before winter meetings take place in Dallas. As the winter meetings are starting next Monday, it is now clear Cherington will announce the possible candidate any time in this
week.
