Bobby Zamora pens Fulham contract extension
Bobby Zamora has given Fulham fans a huge boost by signing an extension to his contract with the English Premier League club.
The popular 29-year-old striker, who is currently out of action with a thigh injury, has penned a new four-year deal that will see him remain at the club until 2014.
A statement on Fulham’s website says that: “Fulham Football Club can confirm that Bobby Zamora has signed a new four year deal with the Club that will see the striker remain at the Cottage until the summer of 2014.”
Zamora’s deal was set to expire at the end of the season and several other clubs had been linked with moves for him over the summer, reportedly including Birmingham City and Liverpool — whose boss, Roy Hodgson, had brought the player to Fulham.
Strong year
The new contract is a reward for a year of excellent performances which culminated in Zamora making his debut for the England national team in a friendly match against Hungary last month. Last season, he scored 19 goals as he helped his club reach the final of the UEFA Europa League competition and finish 12th in the league.
Zamora was able to continue that form by netting three goals in four games so far in the 2010-11 campaign. However, his injury had ruled him out of a certain call-up to the England squad for their UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying wins over Bulgaria and Switzerland. He is also rated as doubtful for tomorrow’s league match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He joined Fulham in 2008 when he arrived from West Ham in a £4.8m deal. He scored 26 times in his first season, but is revered among the Fulham faithful for his strikes against the likes of Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus and Wolfsburg which helped the club reach the Europa League final in Hamburg, which they lost 2-1 to Athletico Madrid.
