Bobcat men’s volleyball team downs the WolfPack – Volleyball news
The Brandon Bobcats men’s volleyball team worked out an impressive 3-1 (25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21) win over WolfPack of Thompson Rivers on Saturday, January 21, 2012.
The enthralling Canada West match was played in Kamloops, British Colombia. The Bobcats jumped right into action by winning the first two sets of the game. The WolfPack came thundering in third set but the Bobcats put an end to the show with fourth set win
and declared match victory.
Success against WolfPack improved the record of Brandon University to 9-7 on the season. The Bobcats made a great comeback after losing two matches against UBC in the second week of January. They bounced back on track and thrashed WolfPack in the next two
games.
However, the WolfPack fell to 3-13 record after losing the match against Bobcats. The WolfPack has a poor record so far but they still have the chance to qualify for the Playoffs of Canada West, only if they perform well in the next two games.
The Bobcats were hugely supported by Ben Glue, who continued his impressive feat. He was equally active on the attack and defence. Glue was credited with 12 kills and 11 digs in the match. He is one of the players who have fought for the supremacy of Bobcats
in last sixteen matches. He is always in the front attackers and has recorded at least 12 kills in all matches but one. Elsewhere, the duo of Paul Robidoux and Jon Sloane, both in their fifth years, notched 10 kills apiece.
The mentor of WolfPack, Pat Hennelly, praised the winning performance of Bobcats and congratulated them for victory.
Speaking of the match, he said, “The first two sets were not good for us. We got quiet real fast again. I thought we had gotten over the problem over the past six or seven matches. I put a few new guys out there—they deserved a shot—but they got quiet.
It was not good volleyball. In the third set, we were losing ground on a long rally. That is still part of our preparation. We are expecting the ball back. Brandon did a good job on defence today.”
He finally concluded by saying that the Bobcats deserved to win.
The team of Thompson Rivers dropped the decision but it had the top scorer of the match in the form of Casey Knight, who added a match-high 15 kills.
The Bobcats are set to play their next match UBC in the next month. They have this week off and will get enough time to get prepared for the upcoming intense fights with the conventional rival.
On the other hand, the Thompson Rivers team will play their final home matches of the 2011-12 Canada West season at the weekend. They are scheduled to take on University of Saskatchewan Huskies on January 27 and 28.
