Bobina’s Senorita Stakes victory ends in tragedy
Haras Santa Maria de Araras S.A. owned filly, Bobina, stayed undefeated in all her three starts, but sadly will not be around to build on it as she posted her hat-trick in the Grade 3 $100,000 Senorita Stakes and broke down a stride past the wire on 5 May,
2012.
She was then euthanized after her brilliant three race winning stint at Betfair Hollywood Park fracturing the fetlock of her right foreleg.
Jockey Victor Espinoza, who took the mount on Bobina the first time, was unseated while the filly went down and landed awkwardly on the ground. He did manage to get up after a couple of minutes, but did call it a day missing two more mounts on the card.
Bobina was bred in Florida and was trained by A.C. Avila, and the daughter of Malibu Moon was sent as the 3 to 1 second choice for the Senorita Stakes against seven sophomore fillies to run over a distance of 1 mile over the venue’s turf track.
Out of Dynaformer mare Maliziosa, Bobina ran the hardest from half mile pole where she was positioned last, but she rallied impressively to down the My Gi Gi by a nose with the winning time of 1 minute and 35.18 seconds, as Byrama finished third on the day.
"She was running unbelievable, as hard as she could," said Espinoza, who said he injured a finger in the fall. "She bobbled a little for one step just before the wire and I tried to hold her together. Next thing I know, she just went down. For a minute I
thought I was going to handle it, but it was impossible. It was just one wrong step. There was no warning. She didn't give me any sign that anything was bothering her."
Bobina started off her racing career with a first asking win in her maiden special weight race over at the venue’s turf course going 1 mile on 31 March, 2012, and then she tried the dirt course and won there as well, going over a distance of 1 mile and covering
it in 1 minute and 37.20 seconds.
