Bobs Worth now stands as the favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup
The champion trainer, Nicky Henderson, could not have been any prouder as his seven-year-old bay gelding got back home with the Hennessy Gold Cup title on 1st December at Newbury race course over three miles and two and a half lengths.
"All he wants to do is try and please. He's not a Sprinter Sacre that wants to show off. He jumps quietly round there, he's hunting round in the middle of the field, he's not running away, he's not hard on the bridle, you wouldn't notice him. But the good
thing is, suddenly, at the second-last, boom, hello Bob. And here we are again."
"Everything was just starting to fall into place," Henderson said, "and suddenly three nights ago, I looked at him during evening stables and thought, hullo. It was like watching a rose come out.”
Bobs Worth’s maintained and highly composed form was reflective through the stance that he picked for landing the race. He stayed in the rear with jockey, Barry Geraghty, and just when the fourth out of the twenty-one fences loomed in the picture, he became
the most prominent contender. Leading through the final flight, he defeated the Paul Nicholls’ trained, Tidal Bay, by 3 ¼ lengths.
Almost all the other participants took turns in making a scene in the field but failed to leave any lasting memories, however the most favoured candidate of the race was truly different, he came and he conquered.
His highly impressive hijack of the race has made him the all new favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. There was a time when the connections were uncertain about his participation and now would be thanking their lucky stars like anything.
It has been four outings at Cheltenham through which the Nicky Henderson trained has come out clean and that has got him as close as 5-1 for the March’s Gold Cup.
The success for sure has cleared accounts with the arch rival, Paul Nicholls, who won the Sportingbet Long Distance Hurdle with Big Buck’s. Both the trainers are chasing the trainers’ championship title and these races and their winner’s for sure will get
one of them closer to it and the other struggling for it.
