Bodemeister turned in a unique work for Baffert ahead of the Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita
Zayat Stables owned 3-year-old colt, Bodemeister, is pointed toward the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby after his second place finish to Creative Cause in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park over a distance of 1 1/16 miles on 10 March, 2012, where
Bodemeister edged out Midnight Transfer to finish third as Creative Cause covered the 1 1/16 mile distance in 1 minute and 41.84 seconds.
Breaking his maiden at second asking, finishing second in his first attempt, the Virginia bred son of Empire Maker, out of mare Untouched Talent by Storm Cat, Bodemeister will be stretched out in distance once again when he takes on the Santa Anita Derby
field over a distance of 1 1/8 miles on 7 April, 2012.
The Santa Anita Derby will be run over the venue’s dirt course and it is exclusive for 3-year-olds. Major prep for the Kentucky Derby, Bob Baffert will be represented by Bodemeister and Liaison in the Santa Anita Derby.
The San Felipe Stakes winner, Creative Cause will also be vying for the purse and get his graded stakes earnings up for the Kentucky Derby.
Bodemeister on 23 March, 2012, turned in a work for Bob Baffert ahead of the Santa Anita Derby, and there Bob Baffert got an unexpected benefit when the runner trained in company with, Splendid Fortune.
Bodemeister and Splendid Fortune were supposed to take off after the 8:00 am break, and with 8 other horses who were scheduled for a workout there, broke out simultaneously, “I’ve never seen that happen before, ever,” said Toby Turrell, a clocker at Santa
Anita track, who has been at it for the past 30 years and coming from his that he has never seen something like this before has to be something quite extra ordinary.
“It was a sight to see.”
Said Baffert: “When Bodemeister broke off, there must have been 10 horses breaking off at the same time. He (jockey Martin Garcia) got him behind and the horse came back filthy dirty but he was fine. He couldn’t have had a better work schooling today with
the dirt hitting him.”
