Bodemeister with a nice drill ahead of the Kentucky Derby
Zayat Stables owned three-year-old colt, Bodemeister, after his impressive victory in the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park by a massive margin of nine and a half length over stable mate, Secret Circle, who have been ruled out of the Kentucky
Derby because of an injury, turned in a workout in preparation of the Grade 1, $2 million Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on 5 May, 2012.
The Bob Baffert trained colt, drilled five furlongs over at the Churchill Downs fast dirt track on the morning of 24 April, 2012, as he covered the distance in 1 minute and 4/5 seconds.
The Virginia bred colt wasn’t alone, as he worked in company with Jemima’s Pearl for trainer Bob Baffert, as Bodemeister’s work was recorded in fractions with the quarter mile in 12 4/5 seconds and 25 seconds flat, while the half mile work was broken down
into 36 4/5 seconds and 48 4/5 seconds.
He then galloped out six furlongs in 1 minute and 13 seconds flat, while the horse was rampant enough to go seven furlongs in a quick 1 minute and 27 3/5 seconds.
“I liked the way he went this morning,” Baffert said. “He likes this track. He just skipped over it. He is very fluid when he picks it up and just floats over the ground.”
The son of Empire Maker, out of mare Untouched Talent by Storm Cat, Bodemeister in his four career starts has won twice and posted two second place finishes, and his most accomplished victory was his recent one when he charged down the stretch to win the
Arkansas Derby convincingly.
Arnold Zetcher’s Liaison, who was being considered by Bob Baffert to start in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, has been confirmed for a run in Run for the Roses on the first week of May.
Liaison arrived on 23 April at Churchill Downs, and yesterday came out for a feel of the track for the first time and galloped 1 ½ miles for his trainer.
“I’m gonna run him (in the Derby),” Baffert said. “He was a different horse out there today. He was never comfortable at Santa Anita and just didn’t like the track.”
