Just got a Severe Macaw and was wondering if anyone knew there body language and what is the common body language for these types of parrots she makes her feathers around her head and it looks like an afro and she'll move her head up and down really slowly so if anyone has a Severe and your bird does this let me know what it means

  1. Parrots are absolutely the best!!!  I have one - a yellow-cheek Amazon who's been part of my family for over 20 years. What your parrot is doing is perfectly normal.  Parrots fluff their feathers when they're comfortable and also as a way to cool off.  When they head-bob they're responding to some stimulus.  Be sure to spend lots and lots and lots of time with your parrot.  They are extremely social and need to be part of the "group" - which is you.  Mine is never in her cage when I'm home.  She's on my shoulder all time time. Give her/him lots of different kinds of toys to chew/play with while you're gone.  I also leave the TV on when I'm gone.  Game shows seem to be a favorite.   If you see your bird starting to pluck feathers it's a guarantee that the bird is bored or anxious.
