  1. Any plane only gets replaced with the company who owns them (or leases them in some cases) pays to get new ones.  There are plenty of airlines flying older planes.  I was just on a charter that was flying old L-1011s.  I didn't want to fly the crate but it was out of my control.  The military says fly on it, I fly on it...or walk.

For many airlines I'd say it will be a while before they start shelling out the money for planes when they can hardly afford the fuel costs raising quicker then they can raise prices for tickets.

  2. With rising fuel costs, airlines are struggling to stay in business.  Sure, as planes wear out, they need replaced, but it is not like you are going to buy one airplane of a particular model.  In terms of maintainence, parts, etc. to be practical, you need to have several of the same model.  Companies would only switch if there were significant fuel savings, but even then, if they are strapped for cash, it may not happen anytime soon.

  3. Airliners stay in service for 20 years or more before being replaced. When you pay a new aircraft $200 millions, you'd end up using it a bit before replacing it.

Since the 787 and A350 have not even flown in prototype form yet, replacement for the 777, A340 and the like which are still in production will not even start soon.
