Former Liverpool and Swansea City player Phil Boersma admitted that he was surprised to see Brendan Rodgers back in contention for the management http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 at Anfield, and felt that the Liverpool fans might not welcome his playing style.
Following Kenny Dalglish’s sacking by the club’s owners earlier in the month, the Reds reportedly saw their management offer get turned down by the 39-year old Irishman, who vowed to stay at the Liberty Stadium.
With Wigan Athletic boss http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468 subsequently taking the central stage in the news and discussions related to Dalglish’s possible replacement, the story of Liverpool’s new gaffer took another turn with media reports now terming Rodgers as the favourite
to claim the manager’s role at Anfield.
Boersma conceded that he was confounded to see the Irishman back in the management race. He felt that Liverpool had gotten over him after being turned down once but nevertheless acknowledged the impact that he had made at the Liberty Stadium.
He told the reporters, “I’m surprised that he is back in the frame - it is a huge turnaround with Brendan ruling himself out of the race after Kenny was sacked so it is a strange one.”
However, the 62-year old Englishman pointed out that Rodgers had developed a Barcelona-like passing and possession game at Swansea and can be subjected to criticism from the Liverpool fans, who are used to a more direct and attacking play from their players.
He thought that the Swans game was better suited for the Spanish league and that Rodgers current approach is bound to fail at Anfield.
He continued, “I just think that the crowd just might turn on them if they play that type of football. It is not a strange way to play but in the Premier League it is not the brand of football that Liverpool would be used to.”
Boersma also linked Dalglish’s sacking with the failure of the club’s signings to make an impact last season, and believed that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 should have earmarked his replacement before firing him.
He added, “It does not matter what you say about them – they under-performed massively and Kenny paid the price.”
