Can I set the hot water dial on zero (off) on my gas boiler when I don’t need hot water; e.g at night, or will this cause problems to the system, e.g. loss of pressure.

We knew that the boiler switches itself on periodically irrespective of whether we use the hot water or not. We have just had a new gas meter installed and now we can measure exactly how much gas we are using. We have just returned home from a long weekend, and we have calculated that the cost of leaving the how water dial on for four days, while we were away is approximately that of taking 1 and a half bath. Now that the gas is so expensive, we are trying to cut down as much as possible, but we don’t wan

  1. I invested many years ago in an AquaStar hot water heater. It hangs on the wall, has no tank and only turns on when you turn on the hot water faucet. I have saved  thousands of dollars over the last 20 years, don't have to remember to ever turn it down, can go on vacation for days, weeks or months and not spend a penny on unnecessarily heating hot water. I put one in a house I bought 20 years ago and in this house that I bought 8 years ago- I swear by them. They have improved greatly over the years and can supply you all the hot water that you would ever need. They never, ever run out. You could stay in the shower for hours. Another cool invention that I swear has saved me thousands in heating bills is a non-vented gas fired wall heater, I placed one in my den and keep the room at a cozy 72 degrees while the rest of the house is 50 (I live alone). I have a 7 room ranch style home with finished basement (also has a wall unit) that is totally gas (heat, hot water, clothes dryer and outside grill) in the Northeast and my gas company budgeted me at $100. per month for the upcoming season.

  2. it wont cause any problems, but you will have to wait for the water to heat up if you want a hot bath.
