Boisterous to get back to winning form in the Knickerbocker at Belmont
Phipps Stable’s 5-year-old horse, Boisterous, blossomed in the 2011 season, and helped his cause by romping to victory four times in seven starts, with a lone placed finish, but lost his way this season when big things were expected off the Distorted Humor
horse.
However, the Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey is planning to get back Boisterous in winning form by entering him in the Grade 3, $150,000 Knickerbocker Stakes at Belmont Park, and the Kentucky bred will look to return to the winner’s circle in the 1 1/8
mile event on turf.
Shug McGaughey has been hitting the mark with top contenders on turf lately, and will hope that Boisterous responds, especially after his 9th place finish in the Grade 1 Arlington Million at about 1 ¼ miles, but a drop in class and a drop in distance
might help Boisterous get back into winning from.
Out of Cox‘s Ridge mare Emanating, Boisterous in his first competitive start of the 2012 campaign finished first in the Grade 3 Fort Marcy Stakes at Belmont Park on 5 May, 2012, going over a distance of 1 1/16 miles.
Stepped up in distance of 1 ¼ miles in the Grade 1 Manhattan Handicap, Boisterous ran his heart out and finished a strong third, and in his next start over the same distance he finished second to, Rahystrada on 14 July, 2012, in the Grade 3 Arlington Handicap.
The 5-year-old homebred Boisterous will be sent as the 2 to 1 favourite in the Knickerbocker Stakes, and will break from post number 3 under jockey Jose Lezcano carrying 124 pounds with the 10 to 1 choice Tune Me In.
Boisterous will have to be wary of the second favourite, Sky Blazer, who will break from post number 2 under jockey Cornelio Velasquez for trainer Barclay Tagg.
The 4-year-old Sky Mesa gelding finished third behind Dominus and Data Link in his last race, the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga Race Course on 1 September, 2012.
The gelding showed a lot of energy that day, and if anyone who can spoil Boisterous’ party than it is Sky Blazer.
