Boisterous will look to claim the Fort Marcy Stakes at Belmont Park
Phipps Stable’s 5-year-old horse, Boisterous has already been confirmed for a race that is to happen on 5 May from today, and that race will be The New York Racing Association, Inc. NYRA’s first garded stakes race of the season set go underway at Belmont
Park called the Grade 3 Fort Marcy Stakes over a distance of 1 1/16 miles in a race that will further reel in 3-year-old and above colts and geldings.
Claude R. McGaughey III trained Boisterous has already made his seasonal debut in a Gulfstream Park allowance/optional claimer at about 1 1/16 miles on 18 March, 2012, where he finished fourth to winner Turbo Compressor, who covered the distance on turf
in 1 minute and 39.60 seconds.
“His race down at Gulfstream was fair, but that turf probably doesn’t suit him,” said Robbie Medina, assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey. “It’s a hard, short turf, and he wants a little different kind of course. He’ll run well in the Fort Marcy,
even though it’s a shorter trip for him.”
The Kentucky bred son of Distorted Humor, Boisterous seven times last year and bagged 4 races out of the seven, but the most impressive part of the season for his was the backend of the season, where he won two back to back graded stakes races.
It all started after a fifth place finish in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Invitational, and on the bounce he landed the Grade 3 Knickerbocker Handicap at Belmont Park over a distance of 1 1/8 miles on 15 October, 2011.
Then off to Aqueduct race track, Boisterous was flawless in his run in the Grade 2 Red Smith Handicap at about 1 3/8 miles on turf under jockey A. Garcia.
He kept Bold Hawk at bay to finish second and Harrods Creek in third to top the distance in 2 minute and 20.26 seconds.
“I assume the Man o’ War [Grade 1, 1 3/8 miles, Belmont Park, July 14] will be a long-term goal for him,” said Medina. “How we’ll get there, I don’t know.”
