Bojana Jovanovski and Julia Goerges advance into the second round 2011 Mutua Madrid Open
Serbian tennis player Bojana Jovanovski survived a mid match lapse against Hungarian veteran Greta Arn 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to make it to the second round at the 2011 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open in Spain.
The 31-year-old Arn has achieved considerable results on the tour since the start of this season. In her first Women’s Tennis Association tournament of the year at Auckland, she lifted the second WTA title of her career. Ranked
46th in the world, Arn was hoping to continue her good run by reaching the final stages of the clay event. However, a large number of unforced errors in her opening match at the event meant that she was fighting a losing battle.
Jovanovski on the other hand made most of her opportunities as she broke the serve at regular intervals to establish complete control over the situation. The young Serbian has been in decent form since the year 2011 has started.
She has given consistent performances on the tour which include her semifinal appearance at the 2011 Sydney and quarterfinal appearance at the Malaysian Open. However, the 19-year-old will have to be consistent and confident if she wants to advance in a field
full of fierce competitors at Madrid Open.
The match started on a very competitive note as both players exchanged serve breaks early in the opening set. However, with the score tied tt 3-3, Jovanovski made her second serve break to take 4-3 game score lead. She held on
to her serve games to clinch the opener. Arn made a positive start to the match but lost her focus during the set and hence paid the price.
In the second set, Arn made a strong come back. She broke the serve twice in the set and made her opponent’s strategy look completely ineffective. Jovanovski looked on course to an easy win when she claimed her first game of the
set with four straight points. But Arn had other ideas as she played her natural game with freedom and managed to level the set score 1-1.
Jovanovski regrouped herself and outran her opponent in the decider. She showed her physical strength as she won crucial rallies against her opponent. She converted one of the match points to end the contest after 1 hour and 49
minutes of play.
In another match German Julia Goerges upset 14th seed Kaia Kanepi of Estonia in three sets 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-4 to move ahead at the event.
Goerges held her nerves to clinch the opener in the tie-breaker. Kanepi came back strongly to pocket the second dropping only a game in the set. However, it was the 22 year old German who emerged victorious from the contest that
lasted for more than 2 hours and 10 minutes. Goerges made the only serve break of the final set in seventh game and then held on to her serve games to ensure a place in second round of the prestigious WTA tournament.
