Bojana Jovanovski outdistances Arantxa Parra Santonja in the qualifying 2nd round – Rogers Cup 2011
Playing the fourth match of the second qualifying round of the Rogers Cup 2011 at the Rexall Centre, York University, Toronto, were the Serb Bojana Jovanovski and Espanola Arantxa Parra Santonja. The Serb sent the Hispanic (Santonja)
staggering back to the lockers by surviving a mid match lapse in an impressive win of 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-4.
Amidst the first set, Santoja lost the pitch and was only able to save 4 of the 7 break points on her serve, whereas, the Serb did gave only one break point opportunity to her 28-year old Hispanic (Santonja) opponent and was able
to capitalise on 43% break points won.
The world number 54 Jovanovski’s precision did not waver and she committed zero double faults but instead smashed an ace. While her opponent had a wobbly hand and she struck one line fault along with an ace.
The 19-year old (Jovanovski) had a strong back swing which enabled her to win an average 56% of her total return points against her opponent, who was barely able to win 41% of her total return points.
Jovanovski’s strong forehand strokes won her a laudable 16 out of 27 service points, making it a 59% win against Santonja who was struggling with her serve. Therefore, the Serb triumphed with 8 points more than her Hispanic opponent
in the first set.
Although The world number 125 (Santonja) she did not perfect her accuracy she made a jumped right back into the set and won 33 of 56 in her total service points along with winning 40% of her total return points, thus attaining
a total of one point more than her 19-year-old Serbian opponent.
The Hispanic bagged 67% of her break point advantages and was capable of saving 50% of her break points faced. Whereas, Jovanovski’s defence failed her and she was only able to save 1 of the 3 break point chances but capitalised
on 2 of the 4 break points won.
The two players had spilt a set each and embarked on a marathon one hour plus third set, Jovanovski was just barely able to close out on her Hispanic adversary by gaining an extra 5 points in the total set points of the third set.
The Serb served one ace and perfected her precision after having learnt her lesson in the second set. She succeeded in attaining a commendable 58% win in total service points against the 21-year-old Hispanic who only managed a
54%.
Both the players had a strong defence but Jovanovski’s Defence was sturdier and she saved a grand 9 of 10 break points and broke her opponent twice. While, the 28-year-old Hispanic saved 60% of her break points and won a mere 10%.
Therefore she lost the set with 5 fewer points than the Serbian and the match with a 2-1.
