Bojana Jovanovski overshadows Alona Bondarenko in first round – Kremlin Cup 2011
The two unseeded players; Serbian Bojana Jovanovski sent Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko packing in the opening round of the Kremlin Cup 2011. The two rivals battled swords on the indoor hard courts of the Olympic Stadium, Moscow and
after just sixty three minutes the Serbian teenager overpowered the 27 year-old Ukrainian, Bondarenko in straight sets of 6-3, 6-0, on Monday the 17th of October 2011.
Opting to serve first for the initial round of the match was Jovanovski and she quickly bagged her opening service game to initiate the scoreboard at 1-0. Following in her footsteps was Bondarenko, who too skilfully handled her
service game to place herself on the scoreboard beside Jovanovski at 1-1. In the subsequent two games, the players achieved a game on their respective serves and the scoreboard had shifted into a tie at 2-2.
They once more repeated the feat on alternate serves and the score levelled at 3-3 by the end of the sixth game. In the seventh game Jovanovski held serve and then capitalized on a lucky break to take the lead of 5-3 on the scoreboard.
The Serbian was now only a game away from clogging the opening set and as she smashed a marvellous backhand crosscourt shot, she not only secured her victory of the opening game but was now one up in the match.
Although Bondarenko had hit 68 percent of her first serves on target, she was unable to win points on her second serve and was unable to capitalize on the two breakpoint chances.
The second round of the match was started by Bondarenko and she got off to an appalling start as she was unable to hold her service game. On the other hand, Jovanovski not only powered through the initial set but also set the tone
for the second. She took the lead at 2-0 on the scoreboard by capitalizing on the breakpoint and also with a hold of serve.
The Serbian repeated the feat and further increased her lead to 4-0 by the end of the fourth game. Dominating the remaining set, Jovanovski not only won all her service games but also capitalized on her adversary’s service games.
By the end of the sixth game Jovanovski had managed to seal her victory of the set and the match.
The Serbian Jovanovski managed to reserve a spot in the second round of the Kremlin cup where she will be facing top seed Russian Vera Zvonareva.
