Bojana Jovanovski plonks Garbine Muguruza in the final qualifier – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
World number 58, Bojana Jovanovski, scuttled past the 18-year-old Spaniard, Garbine Muguruza, in the final qualifying round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Saturday. She dismissed her opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to book
a spot in the main round of the tournament.
Jovanovski lost just a single point in the opening game of the match that helped her to post a comfortable start. The 106th ranked Spaniard replied emphatically well to register a serve hold to love and push the scores
to 1-1. Both players repeated the same scores in their respective serve games that took the scores to 2-2.
The 20-year-old Serb was tested in the fifth game but she bounced back extremely well to restrict any leakage of breakpoints. However, the teenager couldn’t handle the onslaught launched by her foe and surrendered in the sixth
game that allowed a lead of two games to her rival.
Both players traded breakpoints in the following two games that kept the lead intact for the Serb. She just had to hold serve to steal the opening set. There was no willpower shown by the Spanish teenager to keep the set alive
and allowed her opponent to cruise away with a set lead after the end of ninth game.
An exchange of breakthrough at the start of the second set hinted at a gruelling battle in the remaining portion of the set. However, the tables were turned upon the 18-year-old Spanish in the following two games when she was forced
to drop a breakpoint and drown to a trail of 1-3 courtesy a serve hold for the Serb.
The following four games of the match witnessed no drama at all except one occurrence when the 20-year-old Serb was under the cosh but she did well to survive the scare and retain the lead. The scores were pushed to 5-3 in favour
of Jovanovski and she was just a game away from winning the clash. Muguruza served to keep the set alive but failed miserably.
Bojana Jovanovski will be up against the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in the opening round of the tournament.
