Bojana Jovanovski plonks Timea Babos to clear round one - Guangzhou Int’l Women's Open 2012
World number 58, Bojana Jovanovski, trounced the 60th ranked Hungarian, Timea Babos, in the opening round clash of the GRC Bank Guangzhou International Women's Open on Monday. She clinched the win in straight sets 6-1,
6-3 and booked a spot in the second round of the tournament. The match hardly lasted 69 minutes at the hard courts of China.
The 19-year-old Babos couldn’t grab a single point on her first serve game; going down to a trail of 0-1 upfront. However, she recovered emphatically well; winning all four points on her serve to cover the deficit and equalize
the scores at 1-1. However, she was again thumped to a trail of a breakpoint in the following game that allowed the 20-year-old Serb to regain the lead.
Jovanovski bagged the first serve hold of the match in the fourth game and protected the breakpoint to build upon that. She broke serve in cracking fashion; clobbering all points played and made it 4-1 in her favour. A serve hold
helped her to extend the lead further and force her opponent to hold serve in order to keep the set alive. Babos failed to do so and lost the opening set after just seven games into the match.
The second set witness a conventional start with both players holding serves for the first two games to make it 2-2. The Serb held her serve for the third time after a bit of struggle and converted a breakpoint to her favour that
allowed her to take a sigh of relief. However, her opponent fought back immediately and grabbed a breakpoint to decrease the deficit to 3-4.
The Serb didn’t wait long to win the second breakpoint and regained the lead in the eighth game; marching along with scores at 5-3. She just had to hold serve and she did in style; winning a very tough tie comfortably.
Bojana Jovanovski will face a tougher competitor in the next round of play. She will be up against the fifth seed South African star, Chanelle Scheepers, who ousted Qiang Wang in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 in her first round contest
of the tournament.
