Bojana Jovanovski squashes Kirsten Flipkens in the opening round - Fed Cup WG II 2012
Serbian booming star, Bojana Jovanovski, ousted the Belgian experienced player, Kirsten Flipkens, in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. On Sunday, both contestants locked horns for the second time in their career during the first round
tie of the Federation Cup.
It was crucial for the Serbian to earn this win in order to stay in the contest and level the tie scores with two victories apiece for each country. The 20-years-old Serb didn’t let her fans down and revenged her loss at
the Hansol Korea Open 2010 from the Belgian. She lost a close three-setter on that occasion but this time she wasted no chance and pounded on her opponent with an all-round onslaught.
Flipkens started poorly with couple of double-faults in the opening game of the match, gifting the first breakpoint to the Serb. Jovanovski doubled the lead in quick succession; scores progressed to 2-0. The Belgian was under
the cosh; finding it hard to land the first serves in the prescribed area. Another poor display in the third game eased her opponent to a three games lead that was quadrupled with a successful serve game in the following game.
With this monumental lead, the Serb made no error in gobbling up the first set and putting immense pressure on her opponent to come back from behind. She spared just two games in the first set and looked extremely threatening
especially with her forehand forceful cross-court winners.
Flipkens settled down in the atmosphere in the second set and capitalized on her serves to gain some momentum. No breakthrough was witnessed for the first eight games of the set. The Belgian starlet was under pressure in
the third game but successfully saved couple of breakpoints to keep the scores level. Jovanovski didn’t left her hunt for the first breakpoint and finally in the ninth game of the set she was rewarded for her outstanding domination throughout the set. She
broke serve and sealed the second set win with a successful serve game.
It was a world class display from a young participant from Serbia. She never felt pressurized by the pressure of performing under difficult conditions. The victory kept her country in the hunt for the next round tie. She
also played in the doubles contest later on in the evening; pairing up with the teenager, Aleksandra Krunic, to take on Yanina Wickmayer and Alison van Uytvanck. To her delight, she won this contest as well and put her team in the next round; dumping the
talented Belgian squad from the tournament.
