Bojana Jovanovski trounces Nigina Abduraimova in opening round – Baku Cup 2013
Top seed, Bojana Jovanovski, stomped over the Uzbekistani challenger, Nigina Abduraimova, in straight sets at the Baku Cup 2013 on Tuesday. She penned down a 6-3, 6-3 victory against the Uzbek to progress into the second round at this WTA International event taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The Serbian star made a sloppy entry at this hard court event. However, she quickly found her rhythm and ultimately pocketed the match with ease. Both challengers were battling each other for the first time.
Playing her first tournament since the Wimbledon Championships few weeks ago, Jovanovski faced difficulty in her transition from grass to hard courts. She lost her opening serve and fell at 0-3. However, the Serb held her composure afterwards and reeled off six straight games, winning by six games to three.
Currently standing at her career best rank of 37 in the WTA Premier Rankings, Jovanovski held her composure in the proceeding set. She drew the first blood in the second game and took a 2-0 lead. The Serb squandered her edge in the very next game but availed another break chance, subsequently taking a 4-2 lead. Jovanovski gifted away her serve in the seventh game but remained focused, eventually carving out the victory with a 6-3 score line.
Overall, the in-form Serb fired five aces and ruled throughout the battle. She clobbered a slightly lower first serve share of 55 per cent in contrast with her opponent’s 57 per cent but impressively availed 24 out of 38 points on it.
The former world number 11, Shahar Peer, will accompany the Serb in the round of 16. She was at brink of exiting in the opening round as she was trailing a set and a break. However, the Israeli star lifted her game and capitalised on Ilona Kremen’s errors afterwards. Peer reeled off last 12 games of the battle and summed up a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory.
