At stumps, on the second day of play in the ongoing three-day match between Western Province and Boland, the latter trail by 140 with six wickets remaining in their second innings after they failed to avoid a follow-on.
The day began with Western Province resuming their innings from an overnight score of 321 for eight.
S Simetu and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jai-Prakash-Yadav-c65330 Bothma seemed on course to posting a big total on the board, however, the latter had to retire with 27 runs to his name, which consequently prevented the batting side from continuing their innings as last-man, BE Hendricks, was dismissed for nil while S Simetu stayed unbeaten on 24, as Western Province managed to post 365 runs on the board.
Boland had an outstanding start to their innings, as openers L van Wyk and GC Stevens hammered a 39-run stand before Western Province drew first blood when Adams dismissed http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Robert-Cowdrey-c60631 Wyk for 21.
The second-wicket partnership led the side towards 70 runs, before number-three batsman KD Petersen perished after smacking 23 runs.
Two runs later, Boland lost their third wicket when GC Stevens was trapped in front of stumps after bolstering a 24-run knock.
With things almost going awry for Boland, UKJ Birkenstock and RCC Canning took charge, humbling the bowlers and leading the side to 95, before this partnership also met its end on the wicket of Canning, who departed after scoring 15 runs.
The wicket of UKJ Birkenstock (20) was a major blow for Boland as the batsman left his side stranded on 107.
The situation then went out of hands for Boland as their batsmen failed to find their feet, losing wickets at regular intervals. Five of the batsmen failed to score in double figures which added to Boland’s miseries. Consequently, the side crumbled on a meagre score of 143.
Forced to bat again, Boland started the innings in the worst possible way, losing their first wicket without a run on the board.
The second-wicket partnership between GC http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stevens-c91368 and KD Petersen yielded 41 runs, before the latter was neutralized with 33 runs to his name.
With a series of disappointing performances, Boland ended the day with RCC Canning (3) and TWR Cloete (12) unbeaten.
