Western Province ended the week on a winning note, as they thumped tournament favourites Boland by an innings and 104 in the CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition match, that was played at Boland Park, Paarl.
This was a shocking defeat for the hosts, which will push the management to seek answers to a lot of questions regarding their disappointing performance. Boland seemed weak in every department as their bowlers lacked the planning needed to counter a tough opponent. Their batting is also a complete wreck, as they were bowled-out twice in the match without troubling the opposition.
After getting clobbered for a massive score of 365, Boland had a decent start to their first innings and looked well set to match Western Province, however, they lost their way in the middle and then their tail was wiped-out, reducing them on 143.
Failing to avoid a follow-on, the home team needed to regroup and craft a big performance in their second innings. However, they had a disappointing start, losing their first wicket with 0 on the board.
They ended the day after piling 82 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets. The plan for the final day was simple; they needed to bat the whole day in order to draw the match. For Boland this was the obvious and the only way to save some pride.
The hosts resumed their innings on the final day with RCC Canning and TWR Cloete. However, this partnership was short-lived as with 90 on the board, fans saw the first wicket of the day go down when TWR Cloete fell with 16 runs to his name.
Five runs later, PJN Jeftha was given lbw after scoring only two runs. With six wickets down without much on the board, things were looking bleak for Boland.
Then just one run short of posting a 100 on the board, the batting side lost their seventh wicket on the demise of RCC Canning, who perished after hitting 14 off 63.
