Bolelli/Fognini upset Lindstedt/Tecau to reach the Men's Doubles semis – US Open 2011

Another seeded duo crashed out of the US Open Men’s Doubles, as the seventh seeded combination of Robert Lindstedt of Sweden and Horia Tecau of Romania suffered a heavy defeat the hands of the unseeded Italian pair of Simone Bolelli
and Fabio Fognini in the quarter-final round on Thursday afternoon.
The contest as staged on the Court 11 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with an enthralling game of doubles tennis. The Italian pair wrapped up
victory in three sets, 1-6, 7-6(7), 6-4, taking two hours and six minutes of play to book a berth in the semi-finals of the last Grand Slam tournament of the current year.
The contest was evenly poised throughout, with both teams playing some quality tennis to come out as the winner. Lindstedt and Tecau were off to a flying start in the contest, pocketing the opener in the most assertive manner and
it appeared as if the seventh seeded duo will easily conclude the competition in straight sets but it went the other way round.
Bolelli and Fognini regrouped with great mastery to turn the tables on their opponents in the later parts of the matchup. The Italians developed a brilliant harmony among them and combined their individual efforts with great effectiveness
to take down the seventh seeded duo in style.
Lindstedt and Tecau conceded six costly double faults at the most crucial moments of the game to let the Italian opponents away with a convincing victory in the end. Bolelli and Fognini suffered two cracking serve breaks from the
seventh seeded opponents to drop the opening set at 1-6 but made a strong come back immediately, dragging the second set into a tie breaker round. Lindstedt and Tecau crumbled in the decider and the second set fell to the Italians’ name at 7-6(7).
Action continued in the final set, with Lindstedt and Tecau fighting desperately to get the momentum back in their favour. A trade of serve breaks was seen in the fifth and the sixth game but a second break point conversion from
Bolelli and Fognini in the ninth game proved decisive in the match. The unseeded Italian duo wrapped us a surprise victory at 6-4, moving into the semi-finals of the US Open to face the ninth seeded team of Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Philipp Petzschner for
a place in the final.
