Bolton Wanderers boss Owen Coyle explains changes to team after 3-1 win over Wigan Athletic
Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle revealed he has had to toughen up with his team, which has failed to perform since the beginning of the new English Premier League season. After a win in their opening game of the season, the Trotters have gone on to lose
six consecutive matches, which has left them at the bottom of the Premier League table.
As a result, Coyle has been left with no option but to drop underperforming players. The likes of Gretar Steinsson, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabrice-Muamba-c13216 and Zat Knight have all seem to lost their place in the first team. His method, no matter how ruthless it may seem, has delivered
instant results. Bolton Wanderers recorded their second win of the season over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium, taking them to a total of six points.
Coyle said in an interview:
“I don't put them out of the team; their performances put them out of the team.
If they don't get to the standard I have got to recognise there is someone else waiting in the wings.”
According to the Scotsman, he had no qualms about leaving players out of the team if they were not performing. Coyle believed the players had to prove themselves week in and week out to ensure a spot in the starting XI, something he had failed to observe
in some members of the current team. He admitted it had been tough leaving some of the players out, but had felt it was a decision he had to make.
He revealed:
“What I have said is when you get the jersey; it's up to you to put in a performance to keep it.”
The Wanderers boss went on to explain his decision to make changes to the team that travelled to Wigan Athletic in their last Premier League match. Coyle replaced Knight with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-c10409 Wheater in defence, who then went on to perform brilliantly in the fixture.
He revealed Wheater had done well, but had unfortunately been sent off against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 because of which he was unavailable for selection in the Premier League.
Coyle continued:
“I felt it was only right that David came back in because he had been so unlucky to get sent off against Arsenal and had played so well against Aston Villa.
Zat Knight came on against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and did well, so he might feel a little bit unfortunate in that respect.”
