Holden picked up a knee injury against Manchester United last season, in March, and has been sidelined since then. However, he has been working on his recovery and his appearances for the reserve team prove that he is close to making his comeback for Bolton Wanderers and the USA national team. Coyle said he was glad to welcome the midfielder back.
Coyle said in an interview:
“It's great to have him back.
I think he has probably been getting a little bit frustrated because he thinks he can click his fingers after being out for six months and get back at the level he was at.”
Coyle admitted it was tough for any player to suffer a long-term injury, but was hopeful Holden would be back to his former form. He said he was certain the midfielder would build up his fitness and be back for the Wanderers at the beginning of the campaign. While it is not certain if Holden will feature for his side over the weekend, he is expected to be back for certain the week after that.
Coyle said:
“It takes time to build up that fitness and your decision-making in a game, but it was great to see him running about with a Bolton Wanderers shirt on, albeit in a reserve game.”
The USA national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann made it to watch Holden feature for the reserve team and Coyle felt that had been a huge boost for the player. He credited Klinsmann for showing support for the 26-year-old midfielder, who suffered from a painfully long knee injury. However, he has been shown a lot of support by both the managers, club and country, which has helped in his recovery.
The Bolton Wanderers boss continued:
“It will be a tremendous boost when we get him back, and for Jurgen Klinsmann to make that trip when it was pouring down and to stay all night to watch the game is all credit to him.”
