Bolton Wanderers boss says club do not have to sell players in January
Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle has confirmed that the English Premier League club will not have to sell players in January despite posting a record financial loss.
The club’s debt rose to £93m after suffering losses of £35.4m during the year, ending 30 June.
However, Coyle insisted that he would not have to sell stars such as defender Gary Cahill and forward Johan Elmander in the transfer window to stem the losses.
He told reporters, "If and when the right offer comes in for anybody, you would have to look at it. But I do not feel under any more pressure today than I was (before the financial results were released) to sell any players.
"From the conversations I have had with the chairman (Phil Gartside) and the owner (Eddie Davies) I am not under any duress to sell players (in January). If that was the case, we would have done that back in August.
"These financial results do not appear on your desk on a Monday and you issue them on a Tuesday. It is an on-going process over the course of the year.
"It did not come as a surprise to the chairman and the owner what the financial situation was going to be. Of course, I would like Gary and Johan to stay as I am here to try and build a team and take it on."
Cahill has attracted admiring glances from other clubs after performing well for Bolton over the last few months and making his international debut with England in a UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying match against Bulgaria in September, but
he has insisted that he wants to stay with the Trotters.
Meanwhile, Elmander, who has banged in six goals for the club this season, is out of contract at the end of the 2010-11 campaign.
