on Scott Parker.
However, Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle did not believe his defender had made a red card worthy foul and launched an appeal to the FA regarding the incident. Surprisingly, the FA agreed with Cahill and the wrongful dismissal, overturning the decision
made by referee Stuart Atwell.
Cahill said while speaking to reporters:
“(The FA) They want to stick by referees but I would have been absolutely amazed if it wasn't overturned. I think without a shadow of a doubt it was the right decision to overturn the red card.”
He continued:
“I'm sure everyone in the stadium was baffled when it happened because I was.
It was just after the halfway line, close to the touchline, yet he said he sent me off for a goal scoring opportunity so that was amazing. He still had 45 yards to run with the ball.”
Cahill was glad that he would be made available for his team in their clash against Aston Villa. The defender has proved to be an important part of his team over the past season and his absence could prove to be lethal for the Wanderers.
Cahill added:
“The right decision was made and I'm available for selection tomorrow.”
According to the Tottenham Hotspur target, the referee had been nice enough to explain his decision to him at half-time. However, Cahill did not feel that justified the wrong decision and was glad the FA had sided up with him instead of the referee on this
occasion.
He revealed:
“Stuart gave me the time of day to explain his decision at half-time which was nice, but there's no defending it.”
The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur in the upcoming winter transfer window, but there have been no offers from the London side as yet. It remains to be seen if the Trotter’s best player will be leaving in the January
transfer window.
