Bolton Wanderers secure second win of the season over Wigan Athletic, Owen Coyle pleased with fighting spirit
Bolton Wanderers boss Owen Coyle will definitely feel relaxed after his side’s second win of the 2011-2012 English Premier League season. Six consecutive losses after an opening day victory saw the Trotters at the bottom of the Premier League table with
just three points, but they seem to be on their way up after yesterday’s 3-1 win over Wigan Athletic.
Former Liverpool striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nigel-Reo-Coker-c27884 found the back of the net to once again give his side an uneasy
lead. Things were somewhat equally balanced until injury time, when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chris-c9006 Eagles scored the third goal for Bolton Wanderers.
The score-line did not truly reflect on the match, which had its ups and downs for the visitors. According to Coyle, his side had done well to soldier on after the equalizer and the missed penalty, which skipper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Kevin-Davies-c20716 could not make the most of. However,
the Scotsman acknowledged his side’s fighting spirit which saw them secure all three points at the end of the match.
Coyle said in an interview:
“The biggest thing today was having conceded the equaliser from a wonder strike it would have been easy for this group to feel sorry for themselves.
"Then in the second half with the missed penalty you start to wonder if it's going to be our day. But we kuckled down from start to finish and I thought we were magnificent.”
After an unbelievably poor start, Coyle felt the one week international break had been important in helping his players recover from the consecutive defeats. He revealed the players had regrouped and worked harder than before in the last week, instead of
taking time off as was customary, the result of which was the much needed win over Wigan Athletic.
He revealed:
“Ordinarily during an international break you would give the players some days off but we had only four or five away and we came in every day.”
Coyle insisted his side’s reason for the poor start was their tough fixture list, which saw them take on the likes of Manchester United, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809. However, having made it past the top sides, Bolton Wanderers now face relatively easier
sides which increase their chances of returning to winning ways. As with their win over Wigan, the Trotters will now be looking to build on their victory next week when they face Sunderland.
Coyle continued:
“We'd played all the elite clubs together but when you lose games confidence is fragile. We had to try to address it and we got a real feel-good factor.”
