Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies called up to England squad
Bolton Wanderers forward Kevin Davies has been named to play for England's national team. He will be a part of coach Fabio Capello’s squad for an upcoming UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying match against Montenegro.
The 33-year-old striker has never played for his country at senior level (he picked up three Under-21 caps), but he has been included alongside fellow forwards Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent and Peter Crouch.
Davies, who has netted against Birmingham City and Aston Villa this season, told his club’s official website that he was over the moon at being called up for the match.
He said that, "It's a really proud moment for me and my family. I've just got to go along and enjoy the experience of being involved with the international team and if I get the chance to play, then I will do my best to impress. I'm sure there will be a
few nerves over the next couple of days and it hasn't really sunk in yet, but I'm looking forward to this opportunity and I'm going to give it my best shot."
Manager Owen Coyle was also pleased for club captain Davies. He said that, "Everyone at the club is absolutely thrilled to hear that the skipper has been called up. He is [a] top man and a top professional. He has got his rewards for the high level of performances
that he has produced week in [and] week out. He works exceptionally hard on a day-to-day basis and I'm sure he will give Mr. Capello absolutely 100 percent."
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Robert Green has returned to the squad, with John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, and Aaron Lennon have also been named in the 23-man group. Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere has also been included, despite also being in the Under-21
squad.
