Bonanza boys volleyball team defeats Coronado in Class 4A state tournament final
Wednesday turned out to be a good day for the Bonanza boys volleyball team as they were able to secure themselves a win in the final match of the Class 4A state tournament.
The team which came runners up was Coronado.
The final match that took place at Las Vegas High was a thrilling and exciting one. Bonanza and Coronado took the game to four long sets at the end of which the scoreboard read: 21-25, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-23.
With their recent win, Bonanza has been able to bring its overall season wins to 23. These victories have been bagged against an impressive record of no loss at all. As opposed to the performance statistics of Bonanza, Coronado does not support an equally
commendable record. The number of times that Coronado has experienced a win amounts to be 19. These victories have been bagged at the cost of incurring losses that tally at a figure of four.
The first set of the match started off with both the Bengals and Coronado coming out strong. Neither team was ready to let the other take the control. As a result the lead did not stay with one team for a long period of time. As the set reached the middle
stages, Coronado started emerging as the dominant party by being able to extend their advantage. Consequently, the first set of the game was won by Coronado at 25-21.
After having lost the opening game of the first set, Bonanza was sent a wakeup call. The Bengals responded positively and were able to step up their game in the second set. Bonanzas were able to keep the pressure on Coronado by hammering down relentless
kills sporadically. Coronado put up a defence but it was not sufficient to stop the Bengals from scoring repeatedly. As a result, the second set of the game was bagged by the Bengals at 25-21.
Capitalising on the momentum built by winning the second set of the game, the Bengals were able to come out strong in the third set as well. Bonanza took the lead early on and kept making Coronado trail for most part of the game. In the end, the third set
was won by the Bengals at 25-22.
After winning the third set, it was only a matter of time that the Bengals took the fourth one at 25-23.
Price Jarman, who is one of the assets on the Bonanza team expressed himself in the following words after his team had won the crucial match, “I've pictured it a million times leading up to today, and I almost threw up 10 times thinking about this game.
But when it went down, I just collapsed. This is the best day of my life.”
